Melbourne’s Hidden Bars for After Work Drinks

Working in the Melbourne CBD means being spoilt for choice when it comes to Friday night drinks.

What do I look for in a bar? A thematic atmosphere, unique character, cocktails made with flair and precision, delicious nibbles and the novelty of happening upon something entirely hidden from the hustle and bustle of the street.

These are five of my favourite Melbourne bars, which make great venues for after work drinks.

State of Grace

Fall from Grace Cellar Bar

Wander to the back of State of Grace on Collins Street, tilt a certain book on the bookshelf and watch it swing open to reveal Fall from Grace. I describe it as the Hogwarts common rooms, but for grown ups. Thematic, moody, full of character and a little bit glitzy.

Eau De Vie

You will find Eau De Vie behind a rather large unmarked door down a rather empty little side street off Flinders Lane. It’s an intimate and dimly lit speakeasy themed cocktail bar. These guys are serious about their cocktails and they do not disappoint. The service is fantastic and so are the cheese platters. Groups of people are accommodated and there is an adjoining room seating around 12 that can be booked.

Hihou

An elegant upmarket Japanese cocktail and wine bar with a floor to ceiling glass front offering a beautiful view. Press the buzzer at 1 Flinders Lane and wait for the hostess to let you in. A great place to start or finish your night. Not the best place for groups of more than 4, as it only seats 30 to begin with.

Siglo

Perched on a rooftop overlooking St. Patrick’s Cathedral and an illuminated Parliament House, Siglo offers an extensive wine and cocktail list, delicious snacks and desserts. They also offer a cigar menu for those that way inclined. To me, this is the only drawback as being seated next to a table of cigar smokers can be a tad suffocating. Open late most nights and it appears, always busy!

Lui Bar

The perfect place to impress visitors. High up in the sky adjoining Vue De Monde, Lui Bar offers stunning views of Melbourne. The bar itself is very fancy (sometimes I wonder if I’m going to be allowed in) and the cocktails are works of art. A great place to start the night, because I couldn’t justify the price of more than 2 drinks!

Speaking of after work drinks, my favourite time of year is just around the corner, which means 2014 will be coming to an end before we know it (scary thought!).

Please let me know of your favourite Melbourne bars so I can add them to my bucket list!
