Workplace Etiquette: Meetings

I once sat in a 2 hour long meeting, having a vivid daydream about how great it would be if I started projectile vomiting. In my daydream, everybody cleared the meeting room in disgust and panic, thus I escaped the air-conditioned prison that is more commonly referred to as a bad meeting.

If you’d prefer to avoid having people daydreaming about escaping your meetings, these are some of my observations regarding ‘meeting etiquette’.

Are Women Prejudiced Against One Another in the Workplace?

women-fighting-at-work-637x355I have been fortunate enough to get to this point in my career without thinking very much about gender disparities that exist in the workplace. I suppose it has been a combination of being young and naive starting out, and being a part of diverse workplaces where women were well represented at all levels of management.   At one of my prior roles, all 3 levels of management above me were women, right up to the CEO. So I suppose that I have had it easy, and that this sort of ignorant enjoyment of equality is the reason that some women, particularly younger women, denounce feminism.

But I read and hear all the time that gender inequality still exists. This is seen when it comes to the differences in pay between the sexes, the Australian Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) publishing that in May 2013, the average Australian woman earned $266.20 per week less than the average Australian man. How LinkedIn Works For Me

I joined LinkedIn in mid 2010, alongside roughly 70 million other users. Since then, LinkedIn has grown from strength to strength and now boasts over 250 million users. This post would seem almost irrelevant save for the fact that I know plenty of friends and colleagues that aren’t signed up. In my opinion, there is very little risk compared to reward, when weighing up whether to invest some time to set up an account. Here’s how LinkedIn has helped me.

Comparison of MBA Programs in Victoria

For me, looking outside of Victoria when measuring up MBA programs wasn’t an option.  I wasn’t willing to relocate and I personally felt that completing an MBA by correspondence wouldn’t have the same advantages.  For one, I had completed my undergraduate course as an off campus student so I had missed out on the typical university experience.  I felt that having contact hours would keep me accountable, allow me to immerse myself in the learning and meet new people.  In short, I was after a holistic learning experience, in stark contrast of my self inflicted ‘let’s do as minimal as possible to get by’ undergraduate experience.
